Anne Inez McCaffrey (born April 1, 1926) is an American science fiction author best known for her Dragonriders of Pern series. She lives in Ireland. Most of her work is SF, but tinged with the tone of Fantasy. Her first story "Freedom of the Race" was published in Hugo Gernsback's "Science Fiction Plus" in 1953.

The Pern series is her major achievement, and features a long lost Earth colony where humans symbiotically pair with tame dragons. Dragons are an important element in fantasy writing and the merging of fantasy with SF was important. She has attracted a whole gamut of readers to the genre.
