Howard Phillips Lovecraft (August 20, 1890 – March 15, 1937) was an American author of fantasy, horror and science fiction. He is regarded by many as a 20th Century Edgar Allen Poe. His mother made him wear his hair long until the age of 6 and treated him like a girl, she was also unaffectionate and frequently remarked how ugly he was. His father went mad, possibly from syphilis, when he was two and died when he was seven.

He became a stalwart of Weird Tales and other pulp magazines with his unique fantasy world set around "Arkham" with its legends of "The old Ones" a mysterious elder race.

I came to HPL late and did find some of the language he uses a bit ancient (and deliberately arcane) but I perservered and was well rewarded, the great thing is that many other writers have written in the HPL mode so you can read Mythos stories by Ramsey Campbell and Stephen King, and his influence on people like T E D Klein is palpable.
