John Ronald Reuel Tolkien CBE (3 January 1892 – 2 September 1973) was an English writer and university professor who is best known as the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was an Oxford professor of Anglo-Saxon language (1925 to 1945) and English language and literature (1945 to 1959).

After service in World War 1 he began work on "The Silmarillion" and for the rest of his life he continued to expand this "subcreation".

I think I started reading Lord of the Rings whilst at college in Plymouth when I was 18 or 19, it influenced me so much I had a tankard engraved with "Strider" and put behind the college bar, it got stamped on by a mindless yob one night, sad really!
