Terry Pratchett was born in 1948 in Beaconsfield. His Discworld comic fantasies are phenomenal UK bestsellers. His first published story was "The Hades Business" in a 1963 Science fantasy. His debut novel "The Carpet People", 1971, is a children's fantasy.

Can't say he is my favourite author but he does have a huge following and I suppose has attracted many new readers to the genre, which means we sell more books in the end - can't be bad.
