Robert Anson Heinlein (July 7, 1907 – May 8, 1988) was one
of the most popular, influential, and controversial authors of "hard"
science fiction. He served as a naval officer for five years before
retiring through ill health, eventually beginning his publishing
career with "Lifeline" for Astounding SF in 1939.
For 50 years he was the father of the US SF fraternity.
Heinleins' Dickensian stories of gritty spaceworlds and kids who
grew up and went to the stars were really great. I loved them as
a kid, some of his later stuff left me a little cold, but his influence
was immense.
